Madras 300

Yesterday, I was watching a documentary, it was about two people trying to trace the path of the early men (~15, 000 years ago), who crossed the Bering Strait from Asia (Siberia) to America (Alaska). The travelers now were in the icy glaciers, one commented that it was lonely and scary. One said “the men then crossed this land for the betterment of their children and future generations”. Right through the film they were trying to put themselves inside the shoes of the people who belong to 15,000 years before. You might have seen similar kind of films. The point is these travelers or the film makers are from the 21st century, they (we) have been on this urban setup all our life, and, when we move to the forest, it is obvious we feel loneliness, but for the man who had not experienced the evolution of civilization, their migration (or the walk) might be just a part of their day. If the above argument holds good for anthropology, then it should hold good for history or reading history too.

We cannot or shouldn’t pace our judgement on the 15th century happenings with the 21st century mindset. Kings were barbaric, foreign invaders were greedy,,,, these are the process of social evolution.

Madras 300 (Published by Sandhya Publications) is the collection of essays and lectures given in 1920’s and 30’s by notable professors, researchers and historians in and around Madras area. Every chapter deals with the different aspects of the evolution of Madras from early 16th century.

Al though, it might sound dangerous and contrary to what I said in my opening paragraph, after reading this book, I tried to imagine the landscape of the late 15th century and early 16th century of this Madras area.

The period of medieval Tamil kings were over. The power is shifting or shifted towards the Palayakars, Marathas, Nayaks, Nawab, Golconda Sulthanate. This area had small pockets of villages. The native rulers didn’t mind to lease the land to East India Company. The company meant strictly business, they didn’t have any agenda to conquer the land or carry out religious propaganda. As the rulers the native people must have welcomed the settlers with warmth and they never cared who ruled them, as long as they don’t disturb religious and caste setup.

The company was leasing lands, villages (by 18th – 19th century they were annexing kingdoms, you can find a correlation here- Raise of industrial revolution in west-decline of business prospects from India- And, raise of British empire in India- British crown started to rule India directly in 1858).

Back to the book and my imagination, the company built this city. The book recounts how the early company officials disliked slave trade. How they encountered the water problem. Their measures taken during famine. Subduing caste wars between, for instance Valakkai versus Edakkai. Efforts taken to maintain temples. Developing infrastructure and communication- roads, rails and harbor. Setting up local administration. Creating recreational places, educational institutions and libraries.

In a sense, East India Company was knitting India as one entity. If we have time machine and travelled to year 1710. Encounter someone in Elambur and say to them that in 1947 there will be one nation from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, they might have laughed at you. Things might have been different if British (or Europeans) were not here, certainly no Chennai.

This city should have retained its name as Madras, not Chennai.

The below is the artistic impression of British surrendering Madras to French at 1756. I have no idea of why there is a dog, that too turning its back !!

I'm a Uber Walker

Chennai Koyambedu Metro Station

I’m an uber walker. (Tom Tom in BGM)

Well that’s how I like to call myself now. Lately, for few months, I got ample time in my hand, but I needed to be at Chennai, couldn’t travel outside. I thought of utilizing the time to explore a new adventure that is – City long distance walking.

You can call me crazy, so be it. So far, I had walked around 70 km across the city. Five long distance walks,
  1. A round trip to Guindy from Vadapalani.
  2. One way from SRP tools to Arumbakkam Metro Station.
  3. 1 way- Vadapalani signal to Anna Square at Marina beach via Kodambakkam & RK Salai.
  4. 1W- Koyambedu CMBT to Anna Square at Marina beach via PH Road.
  5. 1W- Tambaram bus stand to Alandur Metro station.
These are main walks, in between these walks there were several prep walks to train the legs. I’m not fat, not even medium built. I’m lean as a line!, so don’t think I walk to reduce weight.

These walks gave me lots of strength- physically and mentally. (Something has to change!).

I was suffering from sleep disorder, due to prolonged rotating shifts and uneven working hours. Even after quitting the work, I found it hard to break it. Now, I can’t say I’m completely cured, but I’m getting back my biological clock right. (This is called Social jet lag!)

Another issue, I had was after waking up from sleep, irrespective of time, I had this continuous sneezing problem. Now it’s completely gone (Poiyee pochi).

Urban planning and anthropology of the city (Now, I’m an expert'u, chumma ola ..llala..la)
  • As opposed to the common notion all the main and major roads have footpaths. We fail to notice it as we are hurrying in our vehicles.
  • PEOPLE WALK.
  • Most of us think the air is polluted by the traffic, but I see the notion is wrong. It is all because of we live in a closed AC room and once we expose ourselves out we tend to blame the nature. I’m allergic to dust and I survived.
Some good places to walk,
  • Gemini flyover to Marina- RK Salai. Wide road and less traffic + lots of police protection.
  • SRP Tools, Taramani to Madhya Kailash. The service road is paradise for walkers and joggers.
  • Sivananda Salai on the by-lane of TV station and university.

My 2 Paisa for beginners (Now, I’m intermediate and can "can" advise)
  • Don’t jump straight into 10 km or long walk\jog.
  • Practice for 2-3 km for a week
  • Since, you are inside the city no need to carry water from home, unless you are very specific. I’ll buy water bottles from shops while on walk.
  • Do your pit stops in the bus shelter.
  • Plan your route. After 10 km you don’t want to scramble for bus or train to return home.
  • If you find a tender-coconut shop, grab one. It is best to get energy. Avoid aerated drinks.
  • Don’t over stress yourselves. If you can’t do, leave it, as over-stressing will cause injury. As a rule, after a 30 mins of walk, rest for 3 mins.
  • After walk\jog drink lots of water. Some time you might get slight headache due to dehydration.
Never take photos. This will kill time, break your walking rhythm. And, moreover the objective is to walk. If you are interested in photography, take this opportunity as a recce.

What is your experience, share it (Anyway you wont share, padichaduku nandri)

CIFF - Notes from my diary

I thought not to go this time, but things didn’t turn up as expected, so I ended up in getting the pass at the last moment. For some reason, I kept self-abstaining from seeing non-Tamil-English films for past few months. There were times, when I would see 5-6 movies in a week and blog lavishly (!!!) about it. That’s like a machine, end-of-the-day I didn’t get a chance to empathize with the films I saw. Few social media interactions about the films, do fill the void, but it’s mostly a one-way communication or with no active interactions. I lost the hunger or interest. The much needed break (from seeing the films) made an impact to reboot it. Chennai International Film Festival is a place to start my innings again with a fresh guard.

Whenever someone ask me to recommend films to them, I give them few names with a word of disclaimer that I liked those films and it’s not necessary that you’ll like it as your tastes might be different. When a similar kind of discourse is seen in a film, then it is obvious that you have to like that film (assuming that I and the director\writer have the similar thought). I’m here referring to the movie- Taxi by Jafar Panahi. The crowd gave standing ovation. Jafar Panahi is a star in this year edition. The film mocks at the censorship, debates about capital punishment for petty crimes, women rights and cultural activity of pirated films. On total 82-minutes, the crowd was clapping once in 5 minutes. It’s a film which every film-lover has to see.

Swedish films aren't good only in their thrillers and psychology films, looks like they can make good black comedy films too. The title of this film created an interest in me to see it- The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. This must a European version of Forrest Gump. When I said it to an elderly film-lover the other day, he was surprised to see such a long title. I told him the story (time pass, since we were waiting for the next film to start). He felt bad that he missed the film. He said he is attending this festival for past 10 years. He asked the same question, gave me the schedule and asked to recommend good films to watch. I asked him you know Buster Keaton. He replied “who ?”.

Other notables will be Life Eternal and the biopic about Armando Reveron.

Most people felt or at least the people whom I talked felt Dheepan should have been screened in this edition. I’m sure the organizers don’t want any neighborhood political tensions to be discussed in public here.

Venue – RKV Studio, Vadapalani is a good find. If you want to watch the film with the operator then you can head to it. People from west of Chennai can easily crash into it. Woodlands still has that creaking seats.

RKV Studio

Rants – If people are blaming the volunteers, equally the audience should be blamed. Time and again, they are requested to silent the phones, but now-and-then an over enthusiastic business magnet’ phone rings.

Still three days left. I’ll see if I can get back with few more films.

***The heading picture is from the Bengali film, The letterbox. 50% of the crowd escaped half way through the film.

Chennai Rains\Flood - November & December 2015

Rain water has been receded. The North East monsoon is believed to be over, unless there is a sudden change in the BoB climate. Weathermen like IMD Ramanan is preparing for his retirement and Tamilnadu weathermen Pradeep John who was a household name then is slowly forgotten. We can forget everything, but the flood water mark in our walls will keep reminding us about the haunting days.

A survey done via social media crowd sourcing revels that about 60% of houses (Ground floor) were invaded by the rain\flood water at least once. Further splitting up this data revels about 24% of houses (Ground) were flooded thrice.

Table- Number of times the rain water occupied your house (ground floor houses in Chennai) during November & December rains.

A middle class family, living in the ground floor had to spend a minimum of 5K-10K on repair or rebuying the lost things. Ramesh, my friend is residing in the ground floor had to endure the water invasion thrice (Nov 13th, Nov 22nd and Dec 1st). Water drained in one day on Nov 13th and 22nd, but on Dec 1st rain/flood it took three days to drain.

Is Chennai so vulnerable, that its rain water drain system couldn’t handle 25 cms of rain in a day?.

No, Ramesh’ house is not in low lying area. Their house was never flooded; he blames at  the metro road barricade (road separator) on 100 ft road and the Arumbakkam metro station which is partially built on the Virugambakkam-MMDA canal. He says the metro barricade on the road doesn’t allow the rain water to move across the road (left to right). So when one side of road is over 3 feet of water, the other side had no water logging. In total Ramesh and his family had to spend six days out of their home. He and his family had to stay in their neighbor house which is in the 1st floor. There are lakhs of people like Ramesh who got affected thrice.

December 1st – The Climax

It was once bitten, thrice shy for Chennaities. The December 1st & 2nd rains made everything\one stand still for few days. The below map will show the level (As on Dec 2nd morning) of water logging in the areas marked. Mouse over the mouse pointer will tip you the Feet (ft) – Area name (Ex – “3ft – New Avadi Road”). More information can be obtained by clicking on the location.

நவகரகங்கள் TO பாரதவிலாஸ்

Evolution of Temples !

hindu-temple-tamilnadu

Recently had a chance to visit few temples around Chennai, not intentionally, but had to take my relatives around the place as they were new to the city. And, then this thought just flashed on how much the temples had changed in years. It is not like that I haven’t visited temples for long time, but the thought just flashed now.

I’m not here to talk about the spirituals and bhakti or devotion towards god, but about the evolution or change which has happened in the place of worship. I might be wrong, but not completely wrong.

The sanctum sanctorum or easy to understand Garbhagriham is very accessible in our living rooms. Few years before that place was considered as  very holy and so no TV cameras were allowed to shoot. Even now an individual cannot shoot inside the temple, but a TV crew can shoot the very holy place and telecast it in their morning slot to give a daily dose of godly feature inside our living room. The whole part of abishekam is covered in detail. Some temples are feeding it via internet live. All this change happened in few years. At the age of selfies, no wonder if a temple asks the bhakths to pay a special fee and allow taking selfie with the main idol.

Prominent temple garbhagrihams are fitted with air conditioners. Necessity, life style and climate change!

Some years before most of the temples wouldn’t allow men with their shirts on. This practice is non-existence now. Very few still follow. Contrary big shopping malls and cinema theaters doesn’t allow people wearing lungies now.

In Hindu religion they say there are 30x30 crores of gods (numbers may vary). So now there are these new temples popping up with new gods (which already exists in scriptures) with special features and to narrow down the bhakths prayer. And, most of the idols in these new temples are considerably bigger in size. Size does matter. So people want change, they want to pray to new gods.

Food is an important part. Even prominent temples in Tamil Nadu don’t serve free food, but in other states (like Karnataka) they do, with a catch- the eating place is depended on which caste you belong. I’m not sure about the situation now. Don’t get shocked there is this new age temple in South Chennai suburb which sells tea and popcorn inside the temple!

I haven’t done justice to the heading as it needs a vast subject matter. This is just my 450 words on it. There is so much to dig into this subject and I’m not an expert.

Not to forget the big fish changes which were influenced by external factors like – Temple Entry Movements in Periyar time.

Taxi.. Taxi

When I said this to my friend, he asked me, "You are in Chennai for so many years and you are taking a taxi for first time?".  I politely replied "Necessity.." .

I'm not a big fan of taxi apps, because I haven't tried one for myself before, but I had to get one last week as I was with an elder and I didn't want to take a chance of making a long drive in the bike.

I did a small math to compare the taxi and auto fare (As per the 2013 govt rates in Chennai).

Taxi ride-

Total kms - 18.9
Taxi charges - Rs. 316 (Including Rs. 50 as peak hour charge)
Travel time - 63 mins

I was little skeptic, that I was paying more, because the meter was a mobile meter and all through the travel I couldn’t see the distance and the fare. But I was surprised, when I calculated the auto fare for the above distance.

Calculated auto fare-

For first 1.8 kms - Rs. 25
For each additional km - Rs. 12
Total fare - Rs. 230

Things to consider- it's an AC ride, safe and secure. Not many autos accept to put meter, if they do, there is always the staple dialogue "Meter mella potu kudunga" or there is a negotiation part. For the above distance, any auto would have started with Rs. 500 and after negotiation we would have settled to Rs. 400!

The other takeaway from this experience is- I feel the government auto rates are costly, while comparing to the value of service we get in a taxi app service.

I'm not vouching for taxis on top of autos. Bus + Auto are still the best and cost effective way to commute in Chennai after walking. But for long and planned travel, take a taxi.

It depends on how deep of your wallet (Masathil mothal nall).

Helmet Wars

As expected the helmet seems to the center of all the talks in Tamil Nadu for past two days. In spite of the compulsory helmet rule was passed by the government on June 7th by the direction of Madras High Court, our esteemed two-wheeler owners didn’t care for it for all these weeks. Most of them marched to the helmet shops only at the 11th hour. The cost went three times more than the actual price and there were heavy rush.

Alternative Helmets

People went with different ideas to substitute the helmet- One guy wore a cricket helmet, one a vada-setti or tawa or cooking pan and some even sported with a paannai or earthen pot. Looks like our people as we fondly call ourselves as Tamilians must be from a unique gene pool, who can see fun in such safety oriented and life threatening things.

helmet-tamilnadi

Knee-jerk reaction

The court order was welcoming, but the government reaction was not thoughtful. There are approximately 1.5 crore 2-wheelers in Tamil Nadu. I’m estimating approximating 60-70% of people haven’t owned helmet, the percentage will go high outside Chennai. The government should have asked for more time to make the shopkeepers to procure the stock. Not to forget most of the small towns doesn’t even have a dedicated helmet shop.

Some tips for using

If you got one and a first time user, then consider the following to properly use it,

--Make sure you got the bike side mirrors and adjust it so that you can see the incoming vehicles. Start using the indicator lights\hand signals while making a turn (stop turning your head to indicate).

--With the helmet visor closed, you won’t feel the speed of your vehicle, meaning you tend to ride faster unless you keep an eye on the speedometer.

--No matter what kind of helmet you use, if your full head is covered, you will always hear less outside sound\noise, so be cautious and don’t use headphones with helmet.

--Lastly, ensure your helmet is not stolen.

A funny incident happened sometime back, check this, so be doubly careful.

Year 2025 - Jurassic Mars

jurassic-world

**Not a review**

Recently after watching Jurassic World 3D, I realized that no theater in Chennai has a good quality of projecting the 3D film. I’m referring to the brightness in the projection. A quick search in the Google ended up to find that it was the same norm in all parts of the world. The picture is dark as we are wearing the glasses, so there needs to be extra light watts to the projection bulb, which they don’t do. So the effort done by the film makers goes in to drain. Discussing the issue in an FB forum most echoed my views and suggested Luxe in Phoenix Mall which seems to got a good 3D projection.

Back to the film, it didn’t excite me much, especially for a 1990’s kid who grew up by seeing Jurassic Park (I treasured a yellow T-shirt then), all I saw now was the reminiscences (People call it homage) of the first part. Visually it was following its predecessor, the story-line was also the same. Park with animals put in a controlled environment. An accident or incident happens to make the animals to escape. Kids are trapped and they are saved. Finally there is this grand showdown among the animals and the whole mankind escapes from the island.

The funny part is when the raptures talks (communicates) with Indominus Rex. If it has been any other film, people would have laughed out their ass. It takes a kid to suggest a bigger dinosaur? ufff. Any how people loved it! There isn’t much difference between 1993 and 2015 version.

To facilitate a sequel, Dr. Henry Wu escapes with the dinosaurs DNA. I hope the next part after a decade will be set in Mars, where InGen will set its store as Jurassic Mars.

Madras Manade

Ripon Building Chennai

Amidst of my busy schedule (Oh, I see), sometimes, I just browse through the books, which I planned to read this year. One such book is the history of Tamil Nadu politics (Tamilaga Arasiyal Varalaru by R Muthu Kumar), in which a chapter is dedicated to the claim of Madras (Chennai) by Andhra.

We all might know that Andhra was the part of Madras State, with the efforts and struggle of Potti Sriramalu and others, Andhra was formed. While the demarcation was happening, Andhra people\parties started to claim Madras and started “Madras Manade” (In Telegu, Madras is ours) campaign.

Why this flashback now, have you noticed the emblem of Chennai Corporation, if not it is here below.

Chennai Corporation Logo

The book talks about the story behind this emblem. When “Madras Manade” campaign was happening, politician M. P. Sivagnanam (Ma. Po. Si) gave lots of evidence to the committee which was considering whether to give Madras to Andhra. He was also demanding Thirupathi. He then took the support of the Madras Mayor Chengalvarayan. With the help of the mayor, he changed the emblem.

They added three items to it, bow & arrow, tiger and twin-fish, respectively these were the symbols of the Cheras, Cholas and Pandiyas.

Agitations grew stronger, the ruling Tamil Nadu (It was Madras State then) Congress government too opposed the idea of ascending Madras to Andhra. At last, all the parties, including the Nehru government had to climb down. Thirupathi went to Andhra and Madras remained with Madras State (which in 1969 will become Tamil Nadu).

Chennai Book Fair 2015

Take left.. Take right என் அங்காங்கே தற்காலிக traffic constable-கள்.

30 days 30 Pictures

Friends, who are in my Facebook friends list might have already experienced it (some called it as torture!).

I took up a little challenge to myself (no body can challenge me!) to capture & post 30 pictures for 30 days.

OK, when I set a challenge to myselves, I ought to set some rules right. So here are the rules.
  1. The picture should have taken within 24 hours while I'm uploading in my Facebook.
  2. Minimum one or two takes for a shot. No on-site experimentation.
  3. The scene has to be from my daily routine, like my home, office, shops which I visit for my daily needs, streets\roads on my way to office\home\home town, bus which I use for daily routine. So in other words, don't go to a place for the sake of taking picture.
  4. Use my own devices (Moblie & digicam), no eravals.
  5. No stopping in the middle of the challenge.

So, here are the images. (Click on the image to enlarge it)
