What's The Point ?

Brisk business was happening in selling national flags at Tidel Park Signal. Further down to Perungudi- small, medium and large sized flags were for sale in the stationery shops. While I entered into my shift some colleagues who were about to leave for the day (14th Aug) wished me “Happy Independence Day”, I thought “What!!”. I don’t want to spoil their mood and so politely replied back smiling “Enjoy the day off”. At the stroke of the midnight my Facebook wall was filled with greeting messages. NRI friends were waiting for that auspicious 12 AM Indian Time and started to post greeting messages. AR Rahman released his mobile app. People became patriotic! I asked to myself “What’s the point?”

I’m not here to say that the country is in shambles and why to celebrate the day. Corruption, black economy, rich-getting-rich, poor-getting-poor, wo\men empowerment, blah.. blah.. blah. These issues are faced by all the countries.

I might be wrong, but my question is “Where was India some 500 years ago?”. Travel to 1400’s, before the arrival of the Europeans, you’ll see there was no country “India”. The land was ruled by the kings- Mughals, Rajputs, Marathas, Nawabs, Katabommans, Palayakarans… The English merchants named their company as East India as their business nomenclature, which was later acquired by British Empire. They commonly referred to this land as India for administrative purpose.

Do we call all English speaking men as Brits? Then how can all the people living on the right side of the River Indus can be termed as Indians? 

While talking about “Independence Day”, people say “India got independence from British”- This is just to keep reminding us that our ancestors were once slaves to British. We are indirectly taught that we are inferior! 

Some part of this land was ruled by Mughals, so is there a day to celebrate of when we got independence from Mughals?

Technically or factually there was no country named as India before the British Raj, so August 15th shouldn’t be labelled as Independence Day, instead it can be called as a Formation day or Foundation day.

OK. Post World War II new nations were born and one was India. Willingly or unwilling it has been forced on us or we are programmed from our birth. So we all have to accept to this concept of Indian (Not Hindusthani!). Respect the nation. Fight for the piece of land. Build big barbed wire fences. Salute the flag, but not like the politician below.

DMK a Dead Man’s Kazhagam ?

Let's cut straight to the point, most people predict the future of DMK is going to be dead party, this is not going to happen. One cannot just wipe out or discard it just like a fly on the wall!. In spite of the top leadership constitutes family members, the middle and bottom level groups are formed with some sort of democratic values. They have strong model of internal elections and the Dravidian party history to back them up.

In Tamil Nadu, DMK and AIADMK are the only two parties which got an organised workforce who can work at the ground level. In recently concluded elections, when I visited some of polling booths, I can consistently see both party workers in equal. The other parties does have its supporters, but they were either inconsistent or did not show any interest to indirectly canvas the voters.

Even by looking the numbers, DMK didn't win a single seat, but they are second (23.6%) in vote percentage after AIADMK (44.4%). Also, DMK came 2nd in 35 constituencies out of 39 in Tamil Nadu. So in spite of involved in scams under UPA, dubious decisions in Sri Lankan Tamils issue and in-fighting in the party they can retain their "in-house vote bank".

The other numbers which played an important role is 144 & 200 in favor of the ruling party. Also, there is a small percentage of voters who change their vote from one election to another. They weigh their options, read the current scenario and vote accordingly. These small percentage of voters should have opted for AIADMK. The other point to note is the increase of BJP’ vote percentage in Tamil Nadu, 2009 it was 2.34%, in 2014 its 5.5%.

Let’s see how the family drama unfolds in DMK.

That One Rupee

Date/Time: April 24th 5:00 AM

Place: Koyambedu Bus Stand

In the quest to change the history of this country (wooow!), I jumped in to the bus, which was meant to my hometown, Krishnagiri. This 5 AM bus is a ghost bus, because usually there will be only 2 or 3 passengers, but now it’s full. I thought to myself, “hmm, very good, people are enthusiastic”.

Out of curiosity, I asked the guy (Let’s name him Modi) who was sitting next to me, “Sir, are you going to cast your vote”.

Modi said, “no thambi, I’m going for my relative’ marriage in Bangalore”.
(My mind voice - Etha nan nambanuma ?)

Me, “Then, you’ll come back and cast your vote ?”.

He said, “If there is time, I’ll do”.

Me, “grrrrr..”

He asked, “so you are going for elections”.

“Yes, yes”, saying that I turned my head towards the window and got immersed into mobile music.

11:00 AM

In home, we (Me, my mother and wife) had a small discussion of whom to vote. I said, I’m on a mission to get the communist back to the main stage of Indian politics, my wife opted for my choice. My mom said she’ll go for NOTA.

On our way to the booth, my old uncle, who is a die-hard MGR fan, gave me a victory signal (Secret code word for ADMK!!). I then cast my vote. Happy, happy, happy!.

9:00 PM

I was getting ready for the return trip. My wife said you are wearing the same shirt which you wore while coming, it’s smelly. I said, “that's OK, the smell will keep others not to sit next to me”.

9:31 PM

I got inside the bus to Chennai, when I got in, I felt the smell of the suppotta pazam. Is it suppotta or sulphata ?. I wonder how these people get liquor on election day!.

Surprise !, the same guy whom I met while coming from Chennai was sitting next to me. Yes, its Modi. I gave him a look, my mind voice “So, you didn't cast the vote”.

Tickets.. tickets.. tickets .. the conductor started to sell tickets. The fare is Rs 151. He was asking 1 Re. change from everyone, some gave 1.00 Re. and some 2.00 Rs. I gave Rs 202 and got 50 back. Modi gave Rs. 502 and he got Rs 350 back.

What happened to that Re. 1. The conductor should have given Rs. 51 to me and Rs. 351 to Modi !!

I had this kind of experiences with conductors during my college days. These guys will pretend as if they forgot. Some will even argue that they gave it when we ask later. I thought not to postpone it. So once the conductor finished issuing the tickets and when he was returning back, I asked for Re. 1 change. He didn't even say a word, he gave it. My mind voice “Good acting sir”.

Modi didn't ask for his Re. 1 even after we got down at CMBT. He just walked away into the crowd. I couldn't identify him, as there were many Modi’s in the crowd.

Oh!! you want moral of this post!- If you want something, you should knock, otherwise naridum, either a bus conductor or the country.

BJP is all set to release its 2014 election manifesto. This time they have taken inputs from the common man, that’s how they put up on their website.

April 3rd 2014 is going to be their release date. It’s going to be an important event in this election. One can access the previous three manifestos online- 1998, 2004 and 2009. On all three manifestos you can see lots of “..ram..”, like “Programme”, “Gram”, “Framework”, “Mataram”. But the one common thing, which figures in all three is Ram- Building of Ram Temple in Ayodya. Adding to the temple, they included Ram Setu in 2009.

1. The BJP remains committed to the construction of a grand Ram Mandir at Ayodhya. 

2. BJP will not allow anybody to touch the revered Ram Setu. We will evolve a new route for Sethu Samudram bypassing Ram Setu.

The above two comes under the category, “DEFENDING THE CIVILISATION”.

If Modi has vision (Yes, “vision” is what Modi-appointed media calls it. If “Amma” or “Didi” talks about becoming PM, the Modi-appointed media says it as “Dream”) to become PM of this wonderful country, will he discard both Ram Temple and Ram Setu from their manifesto, let alone they have a desire, but why put it as a document.

I don’t understand how they can defend the civilization, when some of their sponsors act in an uncivilized way to demolish a mosque.

Do You Care?

When the release of Viswaroopam and Thalaivaa were stalled in Tamil Nadu. Some, no, most of the ardent fans traveled to nearby states to watch the film. Some traveled on road, train and some even in air. Such an enthusiasm in films, in fact it is more than film, it was for their favorite actor. Most of people who saw Thalaivaa, didn't return to their home, that's different story!!

Most of the people living in Chennai are from other towns\cities. A vast population is from south and west of Tamil Nadu. People working in IT companies, ITES, Businesses, Marketing, Banks, Colleges, Hospitals etc, the list is on and on. In the list, I guess 6-7 out of 10 working class people are from outside Chennai. Conveniently cramped in this urban jail, who are prisoners as well as guards! I hope some of you on this list would have traveled to a nearby state to watch these films.

Any given destination in Tamil Nadu can be reached from Chennai in one night, be it Chennai to Kanyakumari, Chennai to Coimbatore or Chennai to Hosur. At the maximum 10 hours of travel on road. So on April 24th, if your vote is not in Chennai, will you travel to your village\town\city to cast your vote. Or you’ll polish the seat with your ass by whining about the non availability of saraku as TASMACs will be closed on the election day!

I know what you’ll do, pay extra Rs. 100 to get a bottle. Drink well and say Democracy is dead! Of course you are right, because you're dead longtime back!
